I know the difference between Latinized English and real English, and I share this with my students. I know grammar is something one can't prescribe, just describe. I have tutored off and on since high school, and have been a substitute teacher for all grades for the last six years. I excel at spelling and grammar, and had a classical education in literature, Latin and Greek. Because of this classical education, I have been able to teach in-depth,and to share the etymology of many English words with students and teachers alike. I graduated from college one year early, having tested out of all my general studies, which freed me to take independent studies classes, such as in Chaucer and Middle English.

1) Give the person you are turtoring an opportunity to tell you where they are having a problem. 2) While working through problems monitor the person you are tutoring to see if there are other problems. 3) Suggest changes. Never force them. There isn't one correct way. Make a suggestion on how to improve and explain why you are making the suggestion. 4) Do multiple versions of a similar problem. The first time I will complete the problem, explaining each step. The next time the person I am tutoring will guide me through the problem, telling me what to do next. Then the person being tutored will do the problem while I observe. 5)Let them make mistakes. Explain why it is a mistake and show them how to detect it in the future. I have taught more than 130 sections of twenty two different courses in seven different academic disciplines at five different colleges and universities. I have graduate degrees from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. I read seventeen languages. I have children who are twenty one, seven, six, four, and two, as well as a granddaughter who is three.
