I currently teach Biology, which can be a diffucult subject for students to learn. I try to tie real world applications into every Biology topic possible. Students always tend to comprehend and understand Biology material when teachers can relate the applications to real life.
Inspring and mentoring students is a very fufilling career for me. Teaching has always been one of life's goals every since my high school Biology teacher made a major impact in my life. After graduating from Jackson State University in 2006, I moved to Ocala, Florida to start my teaching career. Teaching high school students can sometimes be a very challening position but I would not change my teaching career for anything in the world.

A Little Bit About Me...

A great benefit to teaching so many Biology labs was working with the professors to accomadate their lecture material and create a hands-on application for my students. I found this a wonderful opportunity to take a lot of information and to synthesize it in such a fashion that students could understand a complex process in a simple way. For example, visual demostrations were a favorite of mine, where you could see the light of 'understanding' in my student's eyes. In addition, I'm always very clear on what are the expectations for exams and pop quizzes, so that studying can be more focused.
While earning my PhD in Biology, it was a requirement that I teach at least 3 Biology labs each semester. I focused on labs for Biology majors, so that I've mastered the foundation material so well, I can repeat it in my sleep! In addition, my supervision of undergraduate researchers in my lab ... read more

I love being able to give other students the passion that I have for learning and understanding something new. During my undergraduate work in psychology and training to be a tutor, I learned the different types of learning styles and how to test for them. I use this technique with every student I work with, so that I can teach to their form of learning. I believe that children learn best through practical application and hands on activities that help them better understand what we discuss and work on. All children are capable of learning and excelling, once they understand how they learn best. I strive to instill in every child a feeling of pride and self-esteem in their studies.
From a young age, I greatly enjoyed school and excelling in all that I put my mind to. To this end, I have earned a BS in Psychology and a minor in biology, both with Honors, and am applying to cont ... read more

In 2005, I earned a Master of Science in Animal Sciences from the University of Florida. I have done a lot of research and am proficient in many areas of biology. Conducting research has taught me critical thinking, how to be attentive and organized, and how to develop the grammatical skills to get ideas across to my audience. As an undergraduate student, I worked as a genetics tutor. Last year I taught an Animal Reproductive Physiology and Endocrinology Laboratory that was offered to undergraduate students. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D.
I believe the best way to get ideas across to students and to help them become tangible, is to engage as many of the senses as possible. I realize every student has unique necessities when it comes to understanding different subjects, but I have found that the best way to teach is to create curiosity about the topic being taught and to apply the ... read more

As a former student and professional athlete, I am a very self-motivated person. From the University of Florida I earned a B.A. in History and a Minor in Education. Last year, I worked in the classroom as a substitute teacher on all three major levels of grade school education. In addition, I have been a supervisor and counselor at various camps which require long hours and spendig individual time with children.

I am a very enthusiastic tutor and, as I stated in the previous section, believe teaching in such a way that the student gains a true mastery of the given subject. In a sense, I believe in each student understanding a particular concept in their own unique way that is consistent with their unique thinking processes. I strive to do this by relating a given concept analogously to something the student already fundamentally understands. I also create new problems to solve that probe the students’ progress and comprehension. I try to make these problems as realistic as possible to make them interesting to the student.
Being a Ph.D. candidate and appointed research assistant, I very much realize the importance of true comprehension of a subject. Not only do I hold two B.S. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Chemical Engineering but I also carry credits to the equivalent of a Non-Th ... read more

I have recently earned my BA degree from the University of Florida in the field of Health Science. I have future plans to go to graduate school to become a Physicians Assistant, which will take me 2 years to complete once I get accepted. I am in the process of finishing my application now. I graduated from Vanderbilt in 2004 with a major in philosophy and a minor in geology. My overall GPA was 3.674/4.000. I enjoy using both sides of my brain, so to speak. Through philosophy, I mastered formalities of the English language and developed an aptitude for critical and logical thinking. Through geology, I focused on the practical through the application of mathematical and scientific concepts. I have tutored students in math, English, and the sciences. There is no subject area I can't tackle!
I enjoy helping others understand concepts that they are struggling with. It is very gratifying when a student has that "a ha" moment. I am a little strict with instruction. If a student is not paying attention or has not completed an assignment that I've asked him/her to do, I will not overlook it. I think that, in the interest of the end goal of improving grades, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really like working with children from low income families. I think each child has a different interest and way of learning. I try to discover these learning styles before I begin the tutoring process. I try to allow them to be comfortable and having fun during our sessions. Most of the time I do a lot of question/conversation responses to allow them to find the answer for themselves. I like a problem based learning style, even for the youngest of children. I not only want to teach them how to properly concur their learning material but how to find the information they need if they do not know the answer. Additionally, I want them to have fun and enjoy quality time with a supportive mentor and gain an enthusiasm for school.

I want to first stress that I am only an assistant on their learning journey, not the protagonist. I will not do your child's work for them, but I will make sure that they complete their assignment, and we, as a team, complete it to the best extent possible. I know that a lot of children and adults fail as students because teachers often choose their prized pupils and disregard the rest. I think this is grossly unjust, and believe everyone has the potential for greatness.

I am just as comfortable tutoring students in math and science as in reading and writing. As a secondary school student, I received a number of top science honors, such as first place honors in several state science fairs and being named a semi-finalist in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search. Since high school, my interests have leaned more to the arts and writing. I graduated with a BA with distinction in Art History from Yale University and a PhD in the same subject from the University of Manchester, UK. Overall, I have ten years of experience helping students sharpen their skills in reading and writing and tutoring students in subjects as diverse as drama, art history, general/advanced math and science, and English.
