My goal is to teach high school English. I have several years experience working with youth in teaching roles, including tutoring both math and english. For 11 months in Ecuador I taught English, Health, Phys. Ed., and career skills to elementary school working children and literacy to their parents. Other experiences include 6 weeks teaching project management and career skills to high school girls in DC, 6 months teaching at a special ed. school, and 5 summers as a head counselor for kids with a variety of disabilities. I liken tutoring sessions to the repair of a crumbling pyramid. I believe that every student is capable of learning and understanding the material that is presented to them in class, but that due to some reason, he or she does not understand some of the basic concepts that later material adds onto. Hence, the base of their pyramid is unstable. Usually in the first tutoring session, I try to gauge where the student is supposed to be in the material while at the same time trying to figure out where the missing foundation stones are.
