My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have been writing poetry for a long time and also have done numerous spoken word events.

I have been tutoring independently since 2009 but have always liked helping others learn. I am good with math and numbers. Will go the extra mile to make sure the student/client understands that material. I like to provide as much feedback as possible to the student/client and build their confidence while tutoring them. I have worked with students as young as 5 years old teaching them how to count, numbers, etc to working adults in college and graduate school.

Poetry is one of my top subjects! I am a published poet; both poetry analysis and writing are subjects with which I can assist.

I have personally excelled in English/Language Arts for the entirety of my schooling career. I love to read and write, and as an English major have had a significant amount of experience analyzing literature and writing essays of various types. I have done some small-time tutoring for younger family members and friends in the past and am looking to expand my clientele.

Learning never ceases; so, why should you?

I have had the honor of working with many kids in regards to a variety of fields. My experiences taught me responsibility, patience, the importance of learning and education, and much more. The various teaching opportunities I have been fortunate to have have impacted my social and educational lives; I take what I learn from teaching and apply it to my own studies- having patience and upholding the responsibilities of being a student.
My teaching style is a mixture of strict and lenient. I try to form a connection with students and apply that to my teaching method (i.e. incorporating a similar hobby in a question in order for the student to understand the material better). I expect my students to give me and the other students respect- never speaking while others are speaking, no disruptions, ect. This method of teaching has shown effective and a fun learning environment. I base my ... read more

Learn from a Doctor: Writing, Test Prep, Classical Languages

Ph.D., Religion, Emory University (2013) M.A., Theology, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (2005) B.A., History, Taylor University (2002) My career as a tutor began when I was looking for a way to support myself during my graduate studies in the Boston area. After signing on with a local company, I discovered my passion for finding better ways to help students overcome difficulties and achieve their goals. I enjoyed the challenges of adapting content to the individual needs of each student, of pioneering new ways of communicating ideas, and of working closely with parents to ensure that my efforts were effective. Sensing the need for more structure, I later moved to Kaplan. In more recent years, I have tutored independently. Perhaps the most rewarding part of the work is sharing in the success of my clients. Teaching the way that my students learn best.

I believe in using real life situations, scenarios, and actively using technology. I like to use life lessons to enable my kids to realize that I am humble person, and I truly want the best for them academically as well as student. I incorporate peer discussions, peer tutoring, exit slips out the door, and class discussions to actively engage my students through the content and the process of learning. In doing so, my plan is to get my students to open up about what they know about the content and share it with their classmates. As a result, my students are more engaged in demonstrating content and standards understanding because I allow my students to demonstrate their learning through the way in which they learn best.
I have teaching experience with both general education and special education on the middle school level as well as the elementary level through my private schoo ... read more

My comments on tutoring Poetry : Yes, as mentioned before, I'm a published poet. That does not make me an expert on the subject. I know how to write a sonnet and can show you the various rhyme schemes that pertain to the more classic types of sonnets. There are so many kinds of poems to explore! Many people think free verse is easy because there is no scheme to adhere to; however, this is not the case. If you want to learn about poetry, I can give you the basics. Of course, in college I wrote about poems for a grade and was trained in finding symbolism, meter, etc. Again, these are but fundamental aspects of poetry. The difficulty lies in the fact that poems can be very esoteric.

I enjoy humor where appropriate and am very patient with students who need time to understand concepts that are new to them.
I have extensive experience both locally and abroad teaching ESL. I taught in Korea for two years before working at a local ESL school. Within these two positions, I taught ages 5 through adult. Seven years ago, I became a certified teacher in Georgia and have been teaching ESOL in public schools since then. I have published about a dozen poems and one short story. Currently, I am working on my third novel and am looking for an agent. My forte as a teacher is discovering what a student is trying to convey in his/her writing. Para los que no hablan ingles, soy bilingue. Aunque puedo decir esto, me espanol no es perfecto.

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have taught poetry in the Fayette and Rome County School Systems to high school students.

I graduated from McIntosh High School in Fayette County and studied English and Secondary Education at Berry College. I student taught for a year at Rome High School before graduating and becoming a substitute teacher in Fayette County. I have completed three long-term substitute positions, two of which put me in charge of an entire classroom with all the responsibilities of a full-time teacher. Additionally, I worked at Aloha-USA Mind Math with Elementary Students as an English Teacher and occasionally a Math teacher.
I opt for making the material relatable to my students, which causes it to be more interesting and meaningful. When something is relevant, it is a lot more fun and kids are much more willing to want to learn, which is, of course, ideal.
