As a graduate from Briar Cliff College, I have always enjoyed learning and wanting to help others succeed. I have earned a BA degree in Elementary Education, in which I have taught in the classroom for 2 years, but have also taught at a learning center for a total of 5 years. While in college, I participated in the AmeriCorps tutoring program, in which I privately tutored a few students, along with students in a school setting during the day. Recently, I have been privately tutoring a high school student and a kindergartener mainly for math, reading, English, and writing. I have taught mathematics in grades 3 through college. I especially enjoy working with high school students and college algebra and trigonometry students. Since my retirement from college teaching I have been tutoring at Sylvan Learning, teaching some grade school math, algebra, geometry and ACT prep. I especially enjoy working one-on-one with students because I am able to concentrate on his/her weaknesses. I like to use manipulatives and concrete examples whenever possible. After introducing a concept I work out examples with the student, then have him/her work through several examples while I watch and, finally, have the student work independently on a set of problems. If there are still errors I try to approach the concept from a different perspective and then repeat the process.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a voracious love of learning. Every subject in the Humanities held a fascination for me, and to this day, I read two books a week, write, draw, and study educational Psychology. years after my graduation, i earned my Secondary Teacher of English License at Edgewood College. My finance and I moved to Saint Louis, where I was recruited to teach "at risk" Secondary English, ESL, and Reading for the Los Angeles Unified School District. I also worked with them as a Drug IMPACT II Counselor, and gained real insight into Alternative Education. During this time, I tutored several students with Reading Comprehension difficulties. I like to laugh, have fun, and create a comfortable environment for individuals to learn. It is important to have that type of space so as to ensure that students do not form a sense of anxiety when entering the room or when studying that particular subject. I love creating a variety of activities: group, individual, hands-on, problem solving, comprehension and reading, and activities where students have to get up and move around. As long as concepts and terms are rehearsed and relearned students will be able to store it better than if they learned it once and then move on to the next concept.
