My comments on tutoring Algebra I: Algebra can be easy! There is no reason why students should have to struggle with it. I've seen many reasons why students haven't gotten an A in it, and that's usually because they just aren't focused or can't seem to get motivated. Another problem with Algebra has been making connections with real life. It's very hard for a lot of kids to "get into" something when they can't see the use of it. Those real-world connections really need to be made.

I am very active in the classroom and I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable. There are so many ways to help children learn, yet many of them are not used for one reason or another. If information must be memorized, I like to put it to song or a rap. Other methods of learning that are very useful are concept maps, discussions, and performing. Another very successful method that I've employed is having the student actually teach me rather than me teach the student. It is VERY effective. I've got around 8 years of college and university work under my belt, and I am getting ready to finish a BA in Elementary Education from Western Governors University. I love teaching. I got the teaching bug while teaching English as a Foreign Language in China. I taught there for almost 9 years altogether, 1 year in Beijing, 7 years in Tianjin, and 1 year in Taiwan. I now work as a substit ... read more

Currently a student pursuing a Master's in Accounting and my CPA. I am a double major in Business Administration and Accounting from Transylvania University. I have worked with elementary aged students since I was about 16 years old and I have now progressed into tutoring high school and college students. By working with elementary students I have exhibited that I am capable of vast patience, so I am willing to work as long as the student would require. I teach every student different, so my initial goal would be to learn about the student and find out their favorite methods of instruction.

I believe the best way to learn is by working one on one and then taking the lessons learned and working out problems with out a tutor present and then bringing back the problems that caused a struggle. Even better is working in a group of peers and then checking in with a tutor weekly so that the student and tutor can zero in on what the sticking points were that week. I have been teaching and tutoring mathematics since the age of 15. I started working at a tutoring center where the student's ages ranged from 4-15. I then moved on to college where I studied math and computer science. I was a teaching assistant for Calculus I and II. My responsibilities included leading group tutorials and working one on one in the tutoring center on campus. At graduate school I taught Calculus I, II, and III as a standalone lecturer. After I graduated from the University of Chicago I was an assist

Because I went through the accelerated program I understand the need of hands on activities and alternative learning styles. I bring these into my teaching. I also am a firm believer that doing a lot of problems is the best way to get good at a subject, especially math. I am a high school senior and have been tutoring peers since middle school. Because I am so young I have very few official tutoring hours, however I do mentor freshmen through our highschool EAP program and younger girls through the STEM program. I work well with students in 6th grade and higher. My strong subjects are in math. I self-studied and tested out of Geometry as an 8th grader and am currently in AP Calc 2. I have 33 college credits ranging in every category from English to Math. I have 33 in math on my ACT and have a very strong understanding of the concepts it presents.

My teaching style varies for each student, I try to tailor the work to how the student learns. I have been tutoring students of all ages since I was in high school. I began by tutoring my own peers in math and social studies. I would also tutor children from 1st grade on up in all subjects. Once in college, I tutored college students and younger in many fields, primarily mathematics courses. My specialty quickly became preparation for standardized tests as well as calculus because I have a unique ability to discover how each student learns and tailor the lessons to their needs. I can quickly find where the knowledge gaps exist for each student and fill in those gaps, in order to create a complete understanding of the topic, not just get them to memorize answers.

I have 10 years experience teaching high school mathematics (pre-algebra, algebra, algebra 2) and 6 years experience teaching mathematics at the community college level. I also spent 2 years teaching basic IT (community college). AdDitionally, I have ACT & SAT test prep experience with Kaplan. I have tutored ages 8 - 20. I seek to find out how a student learns best very early in our session and then gear my instruction/tutoring to the student's individual learning style to best meet their needs and goals.

I really enjoyed this class, as well as Algebra II. I'm currently a student at PLD Highschool and have taken all the classes listed that I'm tutoring for. Math is something I love to do on my free time and I know the basics, and beyond in some areas. Graphs of functions and applications for example. Exponential and logarithmic functions and conic sections are also a forte.

I am in the process of working on my teaching degree to become a math or English teacher. I love teaching math! I have learned many teaching styles. Each student learns differently, so there is a technique to apply to very learning style to accommodate individual needs. I am a junior at EKU working toward my Bachelor of Science. Education major with concentrations in Math and English. I have tutored my mom in basic college math as well as statistics, and her grades have definitely improved. I have learned to accommodate individual learning needs and I find the results very rewarding!
