A Little Bit About Me...

While earning my MA in English at California State University, Fresno, I spent two exciting years teaching beginning college writing. I chose to teach the class for students who did not pass the entrance exam for Fresno State because I enjoyed working with the diverse, and primarily ESL, students who populated these classes. I also spent three years tutoring many terrific students there in reading and essay writing. Currently, I volunteer to tutor adults, and attend professional development meetings in tutoring, through the Tulare County Library’s “Read to Succeed” program.
My style of tutoring is skills-focused, with a goal of student independence. I am patient and work to facilitate a student’s ability to do the work herself, by giving her strategies for navigating her own work, and helping her to see, or mentally organize, reading and writing in new ways. A Little Bit About Me...

I have known that teaching is my calling since I was a Freshman in high school. Learning how everything works has always facinated me and sharing that has been equally rewarding. I believe that learning can be fun when it is relevant and interactive. Students have to be given a vested interest in the learning process, asked questions. An environment of trust in which student's inquiry is encouraged is the best way of learning. Moreover, I thing that teachers have to use complementing mediums for teaching (ie. Visual aids, sensory aids, stories,music, etc.).

A Little Bit About Me...

"Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire." This quote by William Butler Yeats summarizes my philosophy of education. I love seeing students become excited about learning and becoming self-directed learners. Oftentimes, this means that the student takes the lead and I am there mainly to provide encouragement and structure. I try to provide a safe environment for learning. I believe there are no dumb questions and it is OK to make mistakes. I encourage students to brainstorm and think outside the box. I find that many students lack the ability to manage their time efficiently. I work with the student in developing organizational skills. I help the student set up goals with measurable objectibles so he can monitor his progress. When appropriate, I utilize contracts to assist the student in becoming accountable.
