Teaching style depends on the subject, the type of material, and the student’s level and ability. The goal is to inspire a student to learn the study skills necessary to excel on their own. In a tutoring situation there is usually the immediate need (to pass a test) and the long term need to be able to succeed on their own. I try to balance these two goals but the guidance of the parents is most critical. I use a combination of repetition, memorization, quizzing, recitation, and problem solving to challenge a student’s thought process so that they may grasp the material. I excelled in grammar, art, health, and science as well. I was a teacher at a private school for a year after college before I started a family and began home schooling. When helping students learn and understand material I believe it is important to first gain the student's trust, so they will not resist receiving help. I am a recent college graduate and find that it is easier to relate to, communicate with, and gain the trust of students, since I was in their position not long ago. Once the individual's trust is gained I will assess their learning style and determine the obstacles they are having with grasping the material.
