As an engineering technician, I recognized that in order to advance my career I would need to possess at least a Bachelor’s degree. To achieve this, I began attending college while working full-time. Over the course of 11 years, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from New York Institute of Technology and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Polytechnic University. I then taught high school mathematics courses, general mathematics through pre-calculus, at Pequannock Township High School in New Jersey for 5 years. For the last 28 years I have been a pension actuary and consultant to large pension plans, during which time I have made numerous presentations to plan trustees and participants, and have also taught the basic pension course for the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries.

Allowing the student to make mistakes and then learn from them. Allow the student to show me not only the correct answer but also to be able to explain how they came to that answer. Preaching to a student and doing the problem for them and hoping that they can then figure out future problems of the same type is in my opinion a subpar teaching style.
Have been tutoring both high school and college students in mathematics for 13 years. I have tutored students in algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, and statistics. I have tutored both student that were struggling to pass and also students who just wanted to improve their performance but were doing satisfactorily without help.

I would say that all people are capable of learning and improving their abilities, knowledge, and skill. My experience has been that if a child, youth, or adult is given the space in which to learn, and introduced to material in a patient manner, in the style that works for them (be that through explanation or visual learning, etc) they will take the initiative to learn and grow at the pace and direction which works for them. People are naturally inclined to learn and grow, and my experience is that when given the opportunity and supportive role of a teacher, they will become interested in learning and continue to do so.
