More About This Tutor...

I entered Virginia Tech as an honors math and physics student and graduated in three years with my BS in physics. At the moment I am trying to decide if I would like to go to grad school to continue on to something else, hopefully with math and physic as at least peripherally relevant. I have never taught a class and have tutored in only in a limited capacity. I however was apart of Virginia Tech's first Physics education class and program and found that I really actually enjoy teaching for teaching's sake. I hope that my limited experience won't scare people away; I am very passionate about these subjects and I would enjoy building up my experience and resume so that I can become an even better educator.
My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting pro ... read more

My comments on tutoring Trigonometry : Covering sine, cosine and tangent functions especially in problem-solving. Laws of sines and cosines. Use of radians and solving problems with TI-83 calculator. Cover periodic functions with varying amplitudes, and graphing all functions.

Eight years of tutoring math subjects for middle school and high school students. I have a keen interest in math and have always enjoyed helping students grasp the essence of a problem and its mathematical solution. I worked for many years in the corporate world, designing and programming mid-range and large scale computers.
I try to present each subject area as a sample problem and show EXACTLY how a solution is reached. Then I invite the student's participation with a view toward understanding the student's thinking. While accuracy in math is vital, understanding the steps involved is crucial.

Teaching Math in English and Russian.

I am a professional teacher. I have 15 years of experience teaching. I have taught Math and Computer Science in college. Also I have taught in both public and private school systems. I have experience private tutoring for students in school, college and also university. I do understand that all students learn at different degrees but they all can learn better. So I am always teaching my students with considering their individual characteristics. I enjoy teaching because I very often hear from my students that they really start to understand Math or Computer Science better only when I take them to learn. Working one-on-one with a student is a great opportunity to really focus on the individual characteristics and academic needs of the student and helping them to be more successful in learning.

One on one or group. Lessons taught, homework assigned, then follow up of homework assignment.
My experience, (both academic and work)has been widely varied, ranging from research and engineering to financial management in a corporate environment, followed by golf course design and landscape management. In addition I used my experience in construction and woodworking to build and market patio furniture. Unfortunately the housing depression of the mid 2000's caused the business to be non profitable and was closed. Since 2005 I have been semi retired and used my construction experience to work at a lumber and hardware store.

I believe that every child has it within them to learn, along with a desire to achieve. I try to foster that growth through patience, understanding, and encouragement. My style is mainly to understand first where there are issues with learning and then work through problems to find specific areas. I work with the child to explain why certain steps are taken, building up to them explaining to me how to attack a problem. Finally, I try to finish with teaching the child how to apply what he has learned to similar issues to cement in what was learned.
I am probably not the typical college graduate. I entered the work force and gained more responsibility quickly. I eventually believed that in order to maintain my growth, I would need a degree and went to the University of Phoenix for a degree in Business Management. If there is one thing that I have learned it is that there is a ... read more

I have a versatile background that began with two business degrees and progressed to a professional career in purchasing and sales. I discovered along the way that my true passion was teaching and I can be more effective in a tutoring one-on-one situation than a classroom setting. I am highly proficient and have tutored nearly all subjects and grade levels.
Teach a man to fish...is for life. Tutoring is the same, especially with younger children. I haven't met a student yet who is unable to learn. My job is to find the method that will best enable students to self-actualize their learning. A success is converting the child's approach and passion for learning. If I helped to change the child's mind about learning, I have literally altered the course of his/her life in a positive way.

I love working with children and seeing them get excited to learn new information. I feel that all children are very capable of learning, just some need that extra one on one attention that is not possible to receive in a classroom setting. I love that look on a child's face when they finally grasp a new concept. By helping a child learn you are really changing their future.
Even though I hold a business degree I have always had a love for working with children. As a college student I worked for two different families as a nanny, where I assisted a total of five children with their school work and projects among other things. After obtaining my BS in Finance from the University of Central Florida I went on to get married and work in a bank. It was shortly after that when I realized that my real passion was with children. When I became pregnant I left my banking position to b ... read more

After graduating from Jacksonville University with a BS in Business Administration, I joined the field of professional baseball. I have been playing professionally in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization for the past 5 seasons. During my off-seasons, I have been working for the Sarasota School Board as a preferred substitute mostly at Sarasota Middle School. I have taught in every subject at the middle school level with my specialties being math, science, and reading. My last assignment was running a tutoring program at Sarasota Middle. I have a true passion for helping children and young adults succeed, and would like to help your children as well.
Apart from baseball, my second love is education. I feel that every student has the ability to grasp a subject or a certain idea. It is all a matter of finding out how that student learns. My main style of teaching is threw the Socr ... read more

I start off by asking the student what he/she is having difficulty understanding in regard to the material we are going over. Then, I proceed to monitor how the student solves problems. Watching the problem-solving methods of students allows me to determine almost immediately where I need to place attention for assistance. I find it very crucial to demonstrate how to solve the problem after the student has made an attempt, in order to teach the quickest and easiest way to answer the problem. I believe heavily in repetition. Students learn best with familiarity, so I have them perform many problems and teach them how to do so systematically.
I have earned two bachelor degrees (BS in Biology and BS in Chemical Engineering) which have enabled me to gain an understanding in many areas of math and science. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing res ... read more

Being a Finance graduate I have a strong foundation in mathematics. I have also taken additional courses at MCC up through Calculus 2 and have received my middle grades mathematics certification and ESE K-12 certification. I have been teaching special education for 3 years and tutoring for 4 years in reading, and elementary, middle, and high school math. I am currently working on a masters in special education with a concentration on behavior disorders as well as an autism endorsement.
Being a special education teacher I understand completely that every student can learn, however they simply do it in a variety of ways. I like to teach to the different senses in the classroom-See it, Say it, and then do it. Not every student can sit and listen to a teacher explain something verbally, they need to experience it.
