Genetics is one of my top subjects! I've tutored genetics for 2 semesters. Running both classroom led discussions and individual tutoring sessions.

Genetics is one of my top subjects!

As a lifelong learner I understand the importance of an effective teacher. I have been teaching and assisting college level classes for 2 years as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. During this time I have taught 6 classes consisting of introductory microbiology, microbial genetics and general biology. Experienced. Effective. The logical choice.

I have always enjoyed teaching others sharing my love of learning. I find it most effective to use a variety of methods to successfully teach information. Material is best learned when it can be easily understood by the student and has practical applications for everyday life. I am not the type of tutor to just hand out answers to problems. I have realized that the best test of whether you understand something is to be able to teach it successfully to another person. Though being prepared is not a direct part of the tutor-student interaction, it is absolutely necessary for the tutor to be prepared far beyond the basic level. Many people find science to be intimidating, but I believe that once a person gets past the vocabulary barrier, the concepts of science are less overwhelming. During my time at the LRC, I developed a teaching style where I first understood the learning style of the student (i.e. visual or auditory) and then discovered why they wanted tutoring, wanted to focus on, and what they wanted to accomplish. I would then delve into the subject matter at hand, drawing, discussing, or having them draw any specific process or problem. Finally, I would have them tell me what they understood from the process that we just discussed. If I felt the student was confident in their abilities I would test them, if I found that they were not very confident in their abilities, I would discuss the lesson and confirm that they understood.
