I enjoy working with students. It seems that, in most cases, tutoring is essentially a confidence-builiding exercise. Yes, it's anout instructional leadership, but it's more about showing a student they can really achieve what they're setting out to do. I really enjoy showing students that they know the solution; it's just about learning how to properly express it. And if they don't know the solution, it's about properly learning it in order to express it.

Both my BA and my MA are in English, and I have extensive experience working in my field. After college, I taught high school English for 6 years. Currently, I work as an adjunct instructor at Pellissippi State Community College and ITT-Tech. Since 2007, I have also worked at the Thornton Center at the University of Tennessee, where I tutor student athletes; I help them with a variety of tasks in the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and research.

A Little Bit About Me...

At the University of Tennessee every student is expected to fulfill certain core curriculum requirements in any degree program. As an AP student in high school, I tested out of U.S. History and freshman English/Composition. I tested out of the first year of Spanish via UT's foreign language placement exams as well. With 18 "free" credits under my belt from day one, I was able to pursue my love for writing in the journalism program. I have earned a BS in communications giving me pratical hands-on editing and writing skills, be it creative, technical, or persuasive. I completed my internship year at Farragut High School, where I taught both freshman and junior year writing and literature.

I believe learning is about confidence. I have seen numerous students doing poorly in courses because they were convinced that they were not capable of learning the subject matter. Small successes help to build confidence in order to move on to the subsequent challenges. I believe in starting with the basics, and making sure that the students truly grasps the subject matter before moving to more difficult concepts. Often, it takes several different approaches before a student is able to understand the concept.
