Teaching confidence through kindness and success

I believe in learning about each student, helping him or her become comfortable with the subject matter and then guiding the student to reasonable learning proficiencies.
I taught high school social studies for 26 years at Tates Creek High School, primarily as a psychology teacher. I also taught a year at Tates Creek Middle School in the areas of Citizenship and American History. Since retiring, I spent five years as a substitute teacher in the Fayette County system, teaching everything in the areas of math, science, social studies, English and also in a variety of elective studies- from creative writing to geometry and history to earth science. This past year, I volunteered as an all-purpose weekly tutor for a fifth-grader at Athens-Chilesburg Elementary. I enjoy teaching and helping young people grow and gain personal confidence.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I supported myself through college by writing for college and community publications.

Approachable, easy-going, and fun.
I have taught at the college level for almost two decades, teaching everything from developmental English to sophomore-level World Literature and American Literature courses. I have also taught Business English and Reading and Study Skills. I have considerable experience in teaching online courses. I also have additional teaching experience in the public school systems.

More About This Tutor...

I've had years of experience due to my love of English. I'd help my friends and underclassmen to understand a novel or get ideas to write a paper. I'd check their grammar and spelling, and offer advice about the overall style of the paper. Now, I'm studying to become a college professor of English and perhaps French. I'm willing to work with students at middle school and high school age who need help either writing or understanding English or grammar, or need help with an assigned book that they can't understand (ergo, Shakespeare).
Depends on the student. I'm very adaptable. To say I am or am not alone thing here would be to exclude those who don't like that style.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have a journalism minor, but it is something I have had very little need to know. An APA format book, or whatever style is being used, serves just as well as a tutor.

I am a teacher that makes sure her students understand the basics, then we build on that. No one is a great writer unless he/she doesn't have an appropriate grasp of the fundamentals. It's like trying to master shooting a three point shot in basketball without knowing how to hold the ball or dribble. I have always been told by students that I am the best teacher they ever had because I don't assume they know anything. I evaluate exactly their proficiency in the subject, and tailor lessons to where they are in their understanding. Also, even though my students may be older, they still want our sessions to be fun! There's a way to make anything "fun," and I know how to do just that. A former gifted and talented instructor as well, I am very creative, so there is no "sleeping" in my sessions!

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a BA in English Literature from Berea College. Berea is known for its rigorous academic program. I worked in the Public Relations Office as a News Writer, doing research and writing news releases for upcoming events. Post graduation, I’ve edited a book manuscript for the author, Normandi Ellis. I have also revised student’s application essays for graduate school. In addition, my Mom, who is a school teacher in Michigan, will sometimes email me grammar-related questions. I have been accepted into graduate school and will pursue further education so that I may teach at the college/graduate level.
I really like the Sanskrit word, “Namaste,” which I consciously use as a point of guidance in encountering people. One interpretation or meaning of this word is: The Light in me sees the Light in you. I want to honor others so that I can be of better service to them ... read more
