Teaching confidence through kindness and success

I taught high school social studies for 26 years at Tates Creek High School, primarily as a psychology teacher. I also taught a year at Tates Creek Middle School in the areas of Citizenship and American History. Since retiring, I spent five years as a substitute teacher in the Fayette County system, teaching everything in the areas of math, science, social studies, English and also in a variety of elective studies- from creative writing to geometry and history to earth science. This past year, I volunteered as an all-purpose weekly tutor for a fifth-grader at Athens-Chilesburg Elementary. I enjoy teaching and helping young people grow and gain personal confidence.
I believe in learning about each student, helping him or her become comfortable with the subject matter and then guiding the student to reasonable learning proficiencies.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I supported myself through college by writing for college and community publications.

I have taught at the college level for almost two decades, teaching everything from developmental English to sophomore-level World Literature and American Literature courses. I have also taught Business English and Reading and Study Skills. I have considerable experience in teaching online courses. I also have additional teaching experience in the public school systems.
Approachable, easy-going, and fun.

More About This Tutor...

I've had years of experience due to my love of English. I'd help my friends and underclassmen to understand a novel or get ideas to write a paper. I'd check their grammar and spelling, and offer advice about the overall style of the paper. Now, I'm studying to become a college professor of English and perhaps French. I'm willing to work with students at middle school and high school age who need help either writing or understanding English or grammar, or need help with an assigned book that they can't understand (ergo, Shakespeare).
Depends on the student. I'm very adaptable. To say I am or am not alone thing here would be to exclude those who don't like that style.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have a journalism minor, but it is something I have had very little need to know. An APA format book, or whatever style is being used, serves just as well as a tutor.

I have 27 years experience in the high school English classroom, and I have a Master's Degree in English from the University of KY. Currently, I am retired and tutor on the side, as well as, run my own business. When I was in the classroom, my students were energized. That's what I bring to the classroom and to my tutoring, a strong knowledge of the subject matter coupled with a creative, energetic approach. My tutoring career began quite by chance as most of my former students kept returning to my home with requests for help with their college assignments in writing. After years of this, I decided that it was a new career for me. When I retired, it was a natural progression to continue educating young people, my true passion, but to do it outside the cinder blocks of a "stuffy" classroom. My brother writes songs for Tim McGraw, in fact he is on his staff of writers. He always said ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I really like the Sanskrit word, “Namaste,” which I consciously use as a point of guidance in encountering people. One interpretation or meaning of this word is: The Light in me sees the Light in you. I want to honor others so that I can be of better service to them. If I am asked to tutor anyone, young or old, I hope that this can be the foundation of our meeting so that the learning process is a joyous one. I have the tools to help assist in this learning, both academically and intuitively. I am also willing to learn and glean what is valuable and helpful for my own experience. The journey to Wisdom is interactive.
I graduated with a BA in English Literature from Berea College. Berea is known for its rigorous academic program. I worked in the Public Relations Office as a News Writer, doing research and writing news releases for upcoming events. Post graduation, I’ve edi ... read more
