I am a very patient, hands-on style of tutor. I take the time and try to explain things to people who have a hard time understanding. I try to gage what the student is struggling with and also what they do understand, so I can quickly pinpoint their troubles and focus on the problem issue. Some kids need more explaining, others need a picture drawn out for them. I am good at finding what method people learn best with.
I graduated from the University of Washington last year with a BA in Journalism. I've also received an AA Degree from Highline Community College. Everyone has the ability to learn but not everyone has the same ability. Most people are visual or tactile learners whereas most teachers, in my experience, use verbal/aural instruction methods. I believe in tailoring my teaching to the needs of the student and not to what I am most relaxed with. I have personally taught several tactile students who had to have something in their hands or they could not grasp the concepts. Other times I've instructed students in strong visual methods incorporating drawings, artwork and short videos.

I believe that all learning builds upon a foundation of previous learning. The key to helping a student to retain information is to make certain that student possesses all the prior knowledge needed to support the new information. For example, it is very difficult to teach a student the concept of the passive verb voice if that student does not understand the difference between a verb and other parts of speech.
