FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY TUTOR (K-12) mdonasci@fau.edu

I use a Reciprocal/Practice based tutoring style. This an effective method because it allows me to interact with the student and help them grow more efficiently while holding an open discussion environment in each lesson. I then reinforce it with practice based assignments which are followed up with reviews in the beginning of the following class. This makes the student not only memorize definitions, but to also understand the reasoning behind different concepts.
Business student at Florida Atlantic University. I graduated from A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts with honors in the visual arts, specializing in Architecture and Mathematics. I have also tutored for 4 years now while in school by teaching a wide variety of subjects to students from the ages of 5-20.

Expert at finding the solution to help you or your child!

I work at the corporate office for Owl Tutors. We help match students to the perfect tutor in the South Florida area. Our tutors have been tutoring for many years and work with elementary through college students. Helping people and seeing them learn motivate students and is why they love with they do. They are extremely patient and willing to do what it takes to ensure you learn the material, as opposed to just passing exams.
Our tutors are trained to be able to relate problems to the real world, making them concrete and simple. For example, a question may ask what is 7 times 25? This problem is abstract and challenging to some people. Thus, I rephrase it to, "If you have 7 quarters in your pocket, how much money do you have?" By making the problem more relatable to the student, the problem suddenly appears easier and less intimidating. Our tutors go through training on how to ass ... read more

My comments on tutoring Science : I have a strong background in all of the sciences, physical and biological. I have taught college level survey courses where either the whole of science (physical science-biology), or the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, earth, and space science) were covered.

My philosophy of teaching is guided mainly by one over-riding principle, respect for the student with focus on the individual. I have taken courses with large lecture sections where out of necessity the professor talked at, or worse over, the student audience, and in this situation I have noticed a tendency for students to disconnect from both the professor and the class material, which certainly hindered material comprehension. Based upon this experience, I have come to prefer various forms of Socratic dialog as an instructor. I believe this teaching style has a number of advantages. First, it keeps the student mentally involved in the lecture, so that class does not degrade into simple mechanical note-taking. Secondly, it shows respect on my part for the students' intellect, which I believe inspires confidence and thus enhances learning and intellectual growth. Finally, it gives studen ... read more
