15 years experience in a broad variety of subjects!

I have been tutoring for over 15 years both in students homes or at public locations such as coffee shops or the public library. My education and experience are broad. I was educated at "Ivy League" level schools and purposefully educated myself in a large variety of the humanities, which in essence all tie together. Basic courses up through most High School material outside of the Humanities are not difficult. Actually, while my education has been primarily in the Humanities, the material I see the most in tutoring is Algebra and Geometry!
I have a way of perceiving the difficulty the student has, and am able to explain the material in a simple way that makes it easy for students to grasp. In NY I was a substitute teacher for K-12 which gave me experience in the different subject levels pursuant to each grade. Prior to NY, I was employed by Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida where I taught both 8th grade and 9th grade classes. My teaching style is "one-on-one" for the most part. My first instinct with tutoring is empathetic: if I were struggling in this particular subject, what would be the best way for me to understand it? If this method proves ineffective, I would choose a different technique. I am a visual learner so I often teach visually. I earned my bachelor's degree in Biology in a general biology program consisting of a wide range of courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. During the course of earning this degree, I twice served as a teacher's assistant for a lower division biology class. I also participated in a biology tutoring program for high school students. I believe that you have to be very hands on and provide more than one style of teaching. One needs to be able to teach for the visual and auditory sensory by being able to provide visuals but then also to describe the material in multiple ways.
I would aid as an assistant tutor in many of my undergraduate classes and help lead study groups before test. I would also review the test in a post test study group to help people understand why they did not fully understand the question either how it was worded or if they just completely missed the question all together but ultimately help prepare for a midterm or final. Since my mother is a high school science teacher I would also go into her classroom and help her in the classroom and lab to be able to help provide the students more one on one attention and elaborate and simplify some of the material that was being taught.
