Testing Skills is one of my top subjects! I don't approve of "teaching to the test" but there is a definite method to being a successful test taker. Wheter it's weekly spelling, multiplication tables, states and their capitals, or the dreaded end-of-grade or end-of-course, I can coach you on strategies that are proven to help you perform better.

As mentioned in my earlier description, I have eighteen years experience as an educator. I have taught students of all ages from early childhood through college and non-traditional adult education. I believe in making learning fun and engaging by relating concepts to points of interest for the individual student.
Tutoring differs from teaching in that "style" is replaced by method. Some of the methods I have used in the past are rhythm and music, neumonic devices, and of course, drill and practice. I have been told that I am gifted with presenting material in novel ways.

I hold a master's degree in Creative Writing and English Literature. My undergraduate degree is in Speech Correction. Currently, I am writing screenplays and making short films.

I find that teachers are most effective when they get to know the children. What interests/motivates them. Using that information I create lessons that are specifically suited for them. By using a variety of resources I help students maximize their potential by realizing that learning can be fun.
After receiving my teaching degree in May 2004 I was a substitute teacher in Washington State for 6 months. Then I spent the next 27 (Jan. 2005- Apr. 2007)months working as a Teacher Collaborator in the United States Peace Corps. Upon successful completion of the Peace Corps I moved to London, England and taught 6th grade from 2007-2010. During that time I did 1-1 tutoring with 10 children for a total of 100 hours. Tutoring was primarily in Math.

I currently have five years of teaching experience. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS degree from the University of South Florida in the fall of 2005. When teaching first grade, I was responsible for educating children ages 6-8 in all of the fundamental areas. I managed to create a loving, encouraging and educationally exciting learning environment for each and every one of my students on a daily basis. I was also responsible for maintaining student portfolios to monitor their academic growth, conferencing with parents weekly via student agendas, parent teacher meetings and through conference phone calls.
I believe that every child has a different manner of obtaining and learning information and it is the instructor's duty to identify each student's learning style and to teach accordingly. Think of a key ring with all sorts of different keys on the ring. As a teacher you must t ... read more

My educational background (I’m an Ivy League grad), high levels of achievement, work experience, mentoring and teaching activities gave me the skills to be an effective tutor. As a senior employee, I mentored new employees. As a graduate teaching assistant, I worked with college students in helping them understand complex subjects. At my daughter’s elementary school, I worked with students on improving their reading skills. My strongest skill set is in English comprehension, composition, grammar, punctuation and spelling. I can also tutor in basic math, social studies and biology. I have related skills in study tactics, test preparedness, research strategies, and using the computer.

My job is to encourage students by providing a positive role model and love of learning. Students are asked to use higher order thinking skills; getting them to dig deeper and ask questions engages their minds and I see them become more excited about learning. First, I check for prior knowledge. Asking students what they already know about a subject helps me know where to begin. Since I am a teacher who is genuinely interested in finding out what motivates each student, I plan lessons that connect their learning to what is relevant to their own lives.
As a results-oriented teacher, I am committed to helping students succeed in all academic areas. I am personable and patient, and enjoy working with both students and parents in order to teach to the strengths and interests of each student. I especially enjoy teaching reading comprehension, writing, and English grammar. As an aft ... read more
