One of the key motivators for learning is the link between theoretical math or science topics and everyday problems that a student can solve using these skills. For example, to help a geometry student understand the significance of the area of a prizm, I asked him to consider how much paint he needs to buy if he wants to re-paint his room. A max/min calculus solution can help select the minimum fence length to create the largest yard for a dog. I also try to approach teaching the same concept from several different angles.
