I volunteer for HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar) every year. This program pushes facilitation, which is what I strive to do. I like to try to facilitate and push my students to ask questions and talk to me as a peer. As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher, especially a teacher of students who struggle to learn. I didn't begin school until I was 28 because I married my high school sweetheart and started a family. I have been teaching both elementary education and special education (learning disabilities) for many years. I have also taught Read to Achieve for several years. I have tutored students in grades K-3 as well as special needs children. I have extensive extra hours in reading and language arts areas.
One of the things that keeps me in the teaching profession is my love and enjoyment of seeing children succeed. During my master's program for educational psychology, I realized that I had to teach and work with children who had identified needs. In the middle of completing my Master's, I began teaching Special Education in an inner-city middle school. I was responsible for adapting curriculum to meet the individual needs of students, implementing accommodations and modifications, co-teaching, as well as acting as a case manager.
