My usual style is to first let you work through a problem as best as you can. This helps identify problem areas which we can work on together. After going through examples aimed specifically at increasing ability in those issues, we can try a similar problem. I realize that math can be very boring to students, but contrary to popular belief it can also be, do I dare say it, fun. I believe that repetition plays an integral part in learning, but only if the material is relevant to the student. I worked for 2 years as an 8th grade math teacher, then 7 years as a 6th grade math teacher at Lowville Academy in Lowville,NY. I moved to be with a loved one to Liberty,NY and taught 6th grade math, science, social studies, and english. I recently moved to the central new york area to be closer to family. Beginning in high school I found myself driven to help children in need. Through my participation in Mercy Action, I raised money for mentally delayed children, and set up numerous barbeques for them. Later, I began tutoring a young brazilian boy in the 5th grade. He needed help with all of his studies, especially math and english. As a political science major, I have gained experienced in essay writing, grammatical skills and research methods.
Before I was able to tutor, I taught 7 year old girls cheerleading. When I began to tutor, I enjoyed being one on one with the child. I am very patient, punctual and considerate. I know children that need extra help need extra time. I find it personally rewarding to supplament a child's education. I also believe it is easier for a child to ask questions when they are one on one with an educator.
