"A person's a person, no matter how small." -Dr. Seuss

My classroom experience with Special Education started while in college at Illinois State University, where I gained very valuable experience teaching in a variety of classrooms. For one semester, I taught in a junior high life-skills classroom where we practiced daily living skills and went out into the community so the students could practice skills such as locating items in a store, paying with money, and crossing the street. Then I spent my Fieldbase semester at two different schools. The first one was 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities. There, I taught them the core subjects of Math, Reading, and Writing, and went into their regular education classes to help them with study skills, Science, and Social Studies. The second classroom was a high school classroom for students with emotional disturbance. There, I taught Health, English, and Vocational Education to ... read more

Because all students learn differently, it is important for me as a teacher to get to know each student to find out what fits their needs the best. I like to offer a variety of activities that appeal to the hands-on learns, as well as kids that need visual cues. I am a patient, encouraging and energetic teacher. It's my joy to find the instruction that really clicks with each student, and celebrate with them over their successes.
I have taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. I also have experience in 7th and 8th grade. My strengths are teaching math strategies such as facts, multi-step problems and algebra. My teaching style is learner-centered, constructivist, and practical. I believe that a teacher must get to know her students on a personal level to facilitate the best learning. By ascertaining a student’s current knowledge and beliefs about a particular subject, I am able to help students advance to their fullest potential. If students understand the applicability of a concept or skill, they are much more likely to be engaged in learning it. Thus, I give students as much “real-world” practice as possible, so they can see the value in the subject they are learning. I am most able to tutor students in all aspects of English and language arts, but I can also tutor in the social sciences like history, psychology, sociology, and geography.
My experience includes teaching college English for three years. The courses I taught (Composition I and II) required me to know the mechanics of En ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a Sunday school teacher for a wide range of age. This experience makes me comfortable in many different classroom settings. I also taught basic health lessons to adult women in developing nations such as India and Uganda. I have been a substitute teacher for elementary, middle, and high school students in the Arlington Independent School District in Texas. I supervised a grant funded tutoring program for refugee children going to school in the Fort Worth Independent School District. I paired tutors with classrooms and students and gave them teaching material. All of the students were learning English as a second or third language. I also tutored the refugee children myself, in reading and in English.
I enjoy helping young students reach their potential. I believe that students learn best when subjects are presented in a interactive and fun way. I encourage student feedb ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Since graduating from Northern Illinois University, I have had several experiences teaching children at the elementary and middle school age. I was a nanny for a family of three for a year right after graduating. It was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to create my own lessons and activities for the children. The following year I was a substitute teacher in Wisconsin for various grade levels and loved each experience. I am looking forward to beginning to substitute teach again this December in the DeKalb area.
I have wanted to be a teacher all my life. I love working with children and teaching. I believe that children are the future and should be given the opportunity to do well and succeed in school. I like to do my best to teach students how to do something and then let them discover and practice how to do it for themselves on their own. I feel that prov ... read more
