I have taken more than the amount of credits I need to graduate with a BA in mathematics from Luther College. I have minors in physics and chemistry. I have always enjoyed math. I have assisted an elementary school teacher in tutoring mathematics. I have assisted middle and high school aged children in learning mathematics when they have not attended class or have fallen behind.
When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. A Little Bit About Me...

I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I have been researching the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets because I plan on using them as a base for the children that I work with at Community Action Duluth through the Circles of Support program.
