A Little Bit About Me...

After I earned my BFA, I started working towards my Master of Art in Art History. I have an understanding of most studio art forms and extensive knowledge of Art History. When I started working on my thesis, I joined the Minnesota Reading Corps, and have been teaching early literacy ever since. For the last three years, I have been working in Head Start classes, preparing children for kindergarten. I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way.
