I have been teaching Italian to other American in Italy and they had good results and they felt comfortable to speak to other people in Italian after a few weeks.
I have a book with me from English to Italian and you will use that during the period that we are together but I will mostly speak in Italian and English when needed. I think that speak and listen and have exercise just in the language you want to learn is the best way to do it.
