EXPERIENCED IN ACT PREP AND ALTERNATIVE LEARNING STUDENTS...

I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. It is especially important to understand the concepts behind the subject matter when planning continue in a similar learning subject.
I am a licensed Social worker with tutoring experience in and out of college. I have the most experience in tutoring Algebra and other math. I have a student now that I am helping with AP English who has dyslexia. I enjoy watching her grammar skills increase and her overall understanding of the concepts develop. More About This Tutor...

I have a year of experience working as a Peer Facilitator at New Mexico State University where I was responsible for grading papers, tutoring, facilitating biology workshops, and hosting exam review sessions for lower level undergraduate biology courses. I am a great tutor because I use my experiences as a student to relate to the students that I am tutoring and encourage them to learn from my mistakes. I try to create a light, relaxed learning environment and encourage students to practice and participate as much as a possible. I also strive to help students build confidence in the subject as well as confidence in their own personal abilities.
Relaxed but hands-on. I ask students to do a lot of practice to familiarize themselves with the subject/topic at hand while providing lots of support.

My comments on tutoring Psychology : My background in psychology is extensive. I have a minor in the subject and have taken many more hours in order to be certified as a teacher. I like teaching psychology and find it pfascinating.

Teaching middle school and high school science from 1983 to 2004, including every science subject listed in the TutorSelect list. I have worked as an educational consultant for national science laboratories, helping them train their scientists to work better in the school classrooms where they volunteer. I have worked for museums and for outdoor education programs, but have found the most satisfaction as a classroom teacher with all kinds of students. I have worked teaching teachers, but they were very difficult students.
Multiple ways of presenting material; musically, visually, building models, finding answers by testing a hypothesis; experimenting, measuring, observing, seeing, touching.

A Little Bit About Me...

Thanks to my education in psychology at Brown University, I have gleaned much wisdom about the workings of human behavior as well as the human psyche. I have been able to observe applications of what I've learned throughout my daily life. This is especially helpful in teaching; I can recognize the various personalities and the accompanying learning styles in the students, which enable me to be able to appropriately adjust how I present the material. Since I was 17, I've been tutoring and teaching a broad range of ages, from young tykes, to professionals, to retirees.
Teaching is one of my great passions. I thoroughly enjoy overcoming the initial hurdles as the children are hesitant to receive me as a teacher, and to see them open up to me. It's also thrilling to see them blossom as they absorb new information and incorporate it. I'm certainly an advocate of fostering intellig ... read more

I have tutored most of the Math and Science courses at Glendale Community College for four years, tutored troubled teens at the YWCA during the same time period, taught Algebra at Gerard Catholic High School for one year, and tutored around the valley for several additional years. My motivation is to be the best at what I do and to teach students self discipline, good study habits, and to impart difficult subjects with clarity using everyday examples and creativity. Throughout my educational experiences I have sought true understanding rather than simply a grade with a stamp of acceptance. I've also worked as a Materials Analysis Engineer, Semiconductor Failure Analysis Engineer, and Metrology Engineer. I can teach most math, electronics, and science courses at the high school and college levels.
I love teaching students and to explore subjects with honesty, creativi ... read more

Through out my experience tutoring a diverse group of kids, I have learned to love and appreciate the art of teaching. It’s important to understand the many differences and backgrounds in every child, only then, we can begin to understand their special needs. I do believe everyone can learn given the opportunity, and resources needed to flourish to their maximum potential. I also believe that as an educator, you must challenge them to a superior level, strive for excellence. It is our job as educators to ignite the spark of knowledge; it is our job to encourage them to go far beyond of what it is expected of them
As a recent graduate from the University of New Mexico. I have earned two bachelor degrees, BS in Spanish and BS in Sociology, this two combined have allowed me to understand social sciences to a new level. As you can expect my grammatical skills have flourished due to the ... read more

I am convinced, partly because of my own experiences, that the current educational system best serves the needs of the average student. I also believe that it seldom addresses the needs of those students whose learning style is not a good fit with the one size fits all educational system. This may be for a wide variety of reasons, but the result is that the student is left without the needed skill set to compete and what’s worse, left with the message that they are responsible for "not getting it" and are inferior or stupid in some respect. I nearly flunked junior high pre-algebra, and was a mediocre math student in high school. I eventually managed to teach myself, and have subsequently scored 800 on the math section of the GRE and was one of about 50/15000 to score a perfect 15 on the quantitative section of the medical college admission test (MCAT). What is wrong with this picture? My ... read more

The combination of a Master's Degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and an undergraduate major in Psychology and minors in Biology and Chemistry along with many years of research experience in biology provide me with a well rounded background in math and science. My specific tutoring experiences began as an undergraduate where I tutored other students in courses I had completed such as: general chemistry, organic chemistry, genetics, general biology and psychology. I enjoy all of the science topics and like tutoring others, it is very rewarding. My experience teaching began after I attained my bachelor's degree. I taught mathematics for a couple of years in veterans upward bound given at the University of Massachusetts to veterans returning to college. The students were multi-cultural and varied in age from teenagers to middle-age. During my master's degree, I was a Teachers Assistant and ... read more

While working as a assistant professor at a number of institutions (including the University of Chicago, University of Texas ,San Antonio and several others) I found I almost always had to teach my students how to take notes, how to read to locate crucial information and how best to structure written assignments. I have also had a lengthy career as a print journalist and have developed my communication skills to a fairly high level. I have tutored a few children of middle-school age but have mostly worked with college and graduate students.
I have found I am most successful by not being overly aggressive. I never confront my students with fast-paced drills or time limits. I like to work with students in a cooperative way, one that allows them to discover the best means of figuring out solutions by themselves. My intention is to build confidence and develop problem-solving abi ... read more

Students need to be equipped with the research skills and ability to fetter out information from a number of different sources. The information must be timely, accurate, credible, relevant, etc. The days of going to a library and pulling volumes of texts to research substantive information has changed. Now, most students understand what a Boolean search is. However, many don’t know much beyond the internet. This is both an imperative skill as a successful student, and as a potential graduate seeking employment.
During the years I have been an instructor and tutor, I have contributed to my students’ confidence and motivation through my interactive and engaging lessons on becoming a successful student. I conduct my lessons with high energy, engaging students to participate and contribute to the discussion. I balance excellent student interaction with effective classroom management. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Socratic, I like the students to build on what they already know so that it becomes an extension of their long term memory not another short term memory soon forgotten. I have found ways to connect almost any subject matter from physics to algebra to chemistry nomenclature into something one already knows. If one uses long term memory pegs one can "file" things in memory and recall with very little effort.
I have received a degree in English and was a pre-law student. I owned a real estate company in 1990s. I was in the Navy (scored 95% on ASVAB) and worked in the field of intelligence.
