I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class. Studies show that people who are used to success are more likely to try again and again when confronted with a challenge. My goal is to build a success-driven environment where the student feels like he/she can do anything. Of course, I challenge the student as well, but first I make sure they feel confident that they can tackle any obstacle they are confronted with.
