A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is so rewarding, there's nothing better than helping someone understand something they have struggled with in the past. I am a very patient person who loves to work with people. I also enjoy helping people overcome challenges. For example: when I worked at the accounting office my specialty was dealing with clients who had or have issues with the IRS. It was my favorite part of the job, especially when the issue was resolved! My teaching style is different for different people, everyone learns differently. The trick is to help people figure out the best way for them to catch on and retain the information. After finishing my masters I hope to teach at the high school or college level.
I finished my BA with concentrations in management and accounting at Troy University in 2007,then worked for three years in an Accounting Office. I left there in January 2010 to pursue my Mast ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I truly believe all children can learn. I am very student-centered as I know that each child learns in different ways. I have a minor in Psychology which I use to help me understand the psyche of the child. Behavior is a very important aspect in learning and I employ Positive Behavioral Supports and an individual approach to every child. I am a strong believer in using real-life problems, manipulatives, and engaging activities that use all the senses.
As a graduate from a rigorous teacher training program at USF, I learned many skills and techniques to to teach students of all ability levels and ages. I was born into a Christian farm family in Hartford, Alabama, in 1952. After earning a B. S. in Special Education from the University of Alabama and a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling from Tennessee Technological University, I taught special education classes at North Middle School in Lenoir City, Tennessee, for nine years before moving back home to take care of my parents. This is my 12th year at Enterprise High School and I am very fortunate to be the teacher of the multi-needs Special Education classroom there. I am also very honored to be chosen by my peers this year as the Enterprise High School Teacher of the Year. I have no plans to retire.

I find that teaching is as much about getting to know each person, finding there strengths and weaknesses and using those to benefit them in their process of understanding. I like to come up with creative approaches that will suit each individual's strengths for learning. I know that one on one attention, support and encouragement is a large component of what is missing in a lot of today's public school classrooms and love the opportunity that tutoring can provide to children who can learn just as well as anyone else, but may not be finding success in the classroom. I live for the moment when the "light bulb" comes on, there is no greater reward for that individual or the person that got to help them arrive there.

My teaching-style is rigorous yet kind. My students say that no one has ever criticized their writing and thought so thoroughly and constructively. I'm known for my patience working with students with foreign-language backgrounds and other disabilities such as a lack of attention and focus. I learned from my professors at Swarthmore College (and a few at Penn) how to project a non-B.S. style, since kids tend to intuitively realize when their teacher has no idea what he/she is talking about. Coming from a family of teachers and professors (who have also been my teachers), I'm confident that good teaching is in my bones. I never use technology just for the sake of using technology.
