My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I then obtained a position as a youth counselor with the YMCA and quickly moved up to Site Coordinator where I was in charge of my own after school care group, including being in charge of organizing activities and managing youth counselors. Most recently I underwent PADI Divemaster training where I had real world experience teaching and assisting PADI Open Water students with classroom, confined water, and open water training.

Regardless of the reason that student is seeking tutoring, whether it be a demonstrated deficiency in performance, or a desire to excel in the subject matter, tutoring is an ideal method to provide individualized instruction to the student and tailor that instruction for maximum efficacy. All students are capable of meeting their individual potential --- the key for the educator is understanding that one student's potential is not necessarily the same as another student's potential.

When you are in charge of a group, you need to make sure that group overall has to succeed. While you may want to have everyone in the group to get A’s on all of their assignments, as a teacher, you need to be practical. Like a workshop in a factory or the support staff in a law firm, a classroom is filled with individuals who have different strengths and weaknesses. These differences may show that certain students learn and absorb knowledge in different ways.
