My educational philosophy includes the belief that all students are able to learn, but they must be active participants in their own learning--they must be engaged. From my time as a reading tutor to struggling readers in middle school, I understand the importance of first assessing a student's abilities in basic literacy (phonemic awareness, letter sounds and blending, concepts of print, recall & comprehension, etc.). Obviously, my approach to readers with greater skills would be different and would include both formal and informal assessments of reading skill. It's my goal to produce strategic readers. I next worked as a long-term substitute teacher for a year. I was then offered a full-time, permanent teaching position as a fourth grade elementary school teacher. This position lasted three years. A Little Bit About Me...

Because of my work with persons who have physical and mental problems, I have learned to be patient and sharpen my listening skills. This way I am also able to recognize when someone is frustrated or exhausted and use these signs to better cope with any behavioral problems that may arise. I always utilize positive language and seek to understand an issue a student may have to help promote a comfortable learning environment.
