I am a positive and caring teacher. I identify a student's strengths and weaknesses, and develop an individualized plan to support them. I believe that young learners need multi-sensory instruction to be the most successful.

Reading and Phonics Specialist

I specialize in teaching dyslexic students how to read. I have my BA in English from UC Berkeley and my MA in Teaching Reading and Writing. I have been teaching systematic reading and phonics instruction since 2009, and am very passionate about teaching reading skills. I am experienced in all the major well-researched reading methodologies. With the program I use, I have watched students jump two grade levels in reading within 6 months of instruction. I teach students skills to decode words using phonics, along with the most common sight words in the English language. To improve fluency and reading comprehension, I incorporate texts that are both engaging and challenging for students into the lessons. I tutored English and Humanities in the Academic Skills Center of my alma mater, Heritage University. I was a Teacher's Assistant at this university for two semesters and often took over for the class in place of the professor. I tutored primarily college students. My specialization was in Technical and Report Writing. I also currently tutor two minor students in a homeschool setting. One is ten years old and has significant reading delays, but has been gaining reading speed and comprehension with me.
