Learning can be fun!!

When tutoring, I strive to make lessons engaging, effective and enjoyable. Specifically, I tailor lessons according to an individual student's needs and involve students in a dialogue by asking questions that provoke thought, conversation, and perhaps humor. Because facts and figures are easily looked up in the information age, I place particular emphasis on thinking and on "learning how to learn". My teaching goals for any student are threefold: 1. learn the material (well!) 2. pass the test/subject (with a comfortable margin!), and 3. enjoy it (most challenging with math!).

We play word games, read out loud, discuss cartoons and ask each other questions/answers. Try to vary up the hour. I am a very patient teacher and try to assess if the student is understanding all that I am teaching. I ask plenty of questions and try to get them to communicate with me and others in the group, if it's a class situation.
I taught English as a second language to adults and children in Austria and Germany while living there (total 4 years). I speak fluent German and lived in Europe for a total of 13 years. In LA, I taught english to a number of Korean and Japanese young adults. I taught at Inlingua and WIFI Institute in Austria and at a business english school in Hamburg.

I like to teach individual or group lessons. At college of the Desert, I had a reputation for being an easy going with a lot of patience when tutoring. It truly depends on the student and the subject. I try to adapt my teaching style to what the student needs. If one approach is not working, then we can work together to find an approach that does. I believe that it is important for the student to be able to relate to the teacher and it is the teachers job to create that connection.
Over the past 15 years I have had variety of different teaching experiences. I taught literature as a TA at UC Santa Barbara while studying for my Masters. I have tutored K-12 students in both Math and English. While studying for my undergraduate I assited in running a homeless shelter where I taught many of the children reading, writing, and math.
