I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes. I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. My experience has taken me across grade levels as well as across the world. In college, I studied educational methods, theories and philosophies as well as human development. During this time, I participated in classroom practicums (aiding with individual/ small group instruction) and then eventually student taught full-time for 1st and 5th grade. Over the summers, I worked abroad in Germany and Italy with children on military bases for a program called Camp Adventure Youth Services. I have taught for 30 years. Five years ago I began tutoring when my daughter was diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder. I feel like I can do more as a tutor than a classroom teacher.
