A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught special education since August of 1989. I began at Dunn Middle School with a mildly mentally handicapped self-contained class. After three years I taught for one year at Clayton Primary in a multi-handicapped class. I then transferred to Four Oaks Middle School in 1993 where I continue to teach. Because I have been teaching since the 1970s, I have extensive experience in several teaching styles and have a creative sensibility. I prefer to assess the student before making a determination as to the choice of learning strategies. I work well in a one-on-one approach.

As a Spanish/English graduate from UNCW I began teching Spanish at the Friends school Of Wilmington. I taught there for two years. In addition to Spanish I was a service learning coordinator, tutor, and yoga instructor.I then taught ESL in Columbus County for one year. In Columbus County I served as a translator and testing agent as well. I have tutored in Spanish, English, and math
I love teaching holistically. I belive strongly in differentiation, not everyone learns the same way. I belive in teaching children out themselves so that they can bulid better study habbits in all areas that they study. I also belive in guided discovery and hands on learning. linking personal meaning and experience with a subject matter helps to solidify retention and create a "learning lightbulb.."

A Little Bit About Me...

As a mother of three teenagers, i decided to go back to school and fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a high school English teacher. I could not imagine myself doing anything but helping young minds grow to their fullest potential. I am highly qualified in the area of writing. My 10th grade students have an 85% proficiency rating for the NC writing assessment. I also teach Graduation Project that requires an 8-10 page documented research paper. My skills in these areas will prove highly useful in a tutoring capacity.
Being a mother of teenagers gives me an edge as a teacher. I have tremendous patience and understanding of the daily lives of young people. I try to make my students feel comfortable and safe in my classroom, if a student does not feel comfortable, they will find it hard to open up to a learning environment. My philosophy is learning does not have to be painful.

I find that teachers are most effective when they get to know the children. What interests/motivates them. Using that information I create lessons that are specifically suited for them. By using a variety of resources I help students maximize their potential by realizing that learning can be fun.
After receiving my teaching degree in May 2004 I was a substitute teacher in Washington State for 6 months. Then I spent the next 27 (Jan. 2005- Apr. 2007)months working as a Teacher Collaborator in the United States Peace Corps. Upon successful completion of the Peace Corps I moved to London, England and taught 6th grade from 2007-2010. During that time I did 1-1 tutoring with 10 children for a total of 100 hours. Tutoring was primarily in Math.
