During my research-based M.Sc. study in Microbiology, I TA'ed three undergraduate courses (General Biology & Introduction to Microbiology). As an undergrad student at the University of Wisconsin, I worked as a writing assistant in the Academic Resource Center assisting students with reading, writing and grammar. I have home schooled my two children for over 10 years using an original curriculum as well as purchased curricula. In addition, I have volunteered for the past three years at the local public library, tutoring writing, reading and math to adults. I have thus worked with children and adults of all ages and skill levels.

Free and unconstrained autobiographical writing is one of the best ways to coax a student insecure about his or her writing skills into putting into words intense experiences from their own life. I tell my students to just tell me in their own words what they are trying to say. When they speak aloud, the words flow, and then I say, "There is your opening sentence right there. Quick! Write it down." At other times, I ask them to pretend that they are really someone else, an actor in a television show, for example, and I have them imagine that the character, not they themselves, are speaking. This releases the student to let go of inhibitions and let the film roll "for the character" and then they stop focusing on themselves.

I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor.
