Teaching and School Counseling Services In One Place!

My style of education is to teach by modeling. Students need to see things in a step-by-step format with instructions, followed by an immediate example. I also provide sample argumentative essays for students who learn by seeing a complete model. My counseling style is to work with students, first by building a rapport and then using that as the foundation to get a feel for their college/career interests. I then look at their grades to help them build a custom transitional plan into early adulthood.
I have been a teacher for the last fifteen years. I teach social studies, but my specialization is teaching argumentative (college level) writing.I have done plenty of SAT prep and tutoring for students at the high school and college level. I am also a school counselor and can offer a vast array of services including FASFA, Naviance/Common Application and college/career counseling.

Before teaching, I completed by BA in Political Science and English and continued on to work for a large political consulting firm in Washington D.C. During my teaching experience I have focused on literature and language arts, and have often tutored my own students before and after school.
As a teacher, I am well aware of the many different ways that children learn. As I said previously, I have been art of both the middle and high school environment, and have worked with students of many different levels. Some chil ... read more

I believe in tailoring my teaching style to individual students that I tutor. The two most important techniques I have used are translating academic concepts into everyday examples that students can readily understand and using positive reinforcement to help them towards their goals. Especially in the fields of math and science, I have found that learning by analogy and real world examples provides the surest path towards success.
Having an excellent and extensive educational track record, I feel I am well positioned to assist current students achieve their goals. I have a JD from NYU School of Law, which helped me master such skills as reading comprehension, analytical thinking and persuasive writing. I have an MS from Yale University and a BS from William and Mary in chemistry (with a focus on organic chemistry) which has provided me with broad experience in the fields of mat ... read more

I personally can say that I have learned the most & can recall the most from those teachers that I consider my favorites. I believe it is because they knew how to inspire and motivate me to achieve what I thought I couldn’t or didn’t want to do. Those early experience is the inspiration behind the way I teach/tutor and write. I once heard it stated that ‘no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care’. I truly believe that you have to have a genuine interest in the individuals you are trying to inspire in order to make learning a possibility, especially in young children & adolescents. I also believe that in order to make a difference & be a positive influence; you really have to enjoy & have a passion for what you do

A diverse education at Wesleyan University has prepared me to tutor many high school subjects. I earned my BA at Wesleyan in Music but I almost double majored in Environmental Science. The high expectations of professors at Wesleyan pushed me to greatly improve my writing ability, with my music thesis earning me honors in music. Environmental sciences sharpened my science and mathematic ability. Extensive courses in music prepared me to tutor music students in any background or concentration.
I greatly enjoy finding a way to inspire a child to understand the problem at hand. Through from my experience in grade school and my observation of students that attend tough schools I've realized the monotonous class schedule and disciplinary philosophy of most schools deflates most student's desire to succeed. While I can relate to this rebellious reaction I also know that it is no ex ... read more

My philosophy is that education should be as individualized as possible because people do not learn in the same manner. For instance, some people are visual learners while others, like myself, are auditory learners. I strongly believe that educators should expose their students to as many fields and ideas as possible. For instance, when I am teaching, I prefer to instruct students on different topics- biology, culture and rules of the English language are particular favorites of mine. I also like to give ideas and explanations that are different than my own (when teaching abstract concepts, of course) so that students can formulate their own opinions.
I have recently graduated from Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. While attending university, I studied various courses- natural science, social science, criminal justice, biology- but my true passion lies in foreign ... read more

I am a determined, enthusiastic, and highly motivated teacher, who wants their students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in an atmosphere that is stimulating and adaptive to their diverse needs. My expectations for my students are high, and by the end of the school year students realize that they can achieve any goal set before them. Geographical and cultural experiences throughout my travels have helped me to become flexible in my teaching, while perfecting high organizational standards and skills. It takes more than a single individual to make a difference in the lives of a class of students. Therefore, I have learned the value of being a team player and the importance of communicating with colleagues, parents, and administrators so that I will be able to provide the best education possible for my students. I believe that my energy, education, and experience combine to ... read more

People who've seen me teach describe me as relaxed, focused, and funny. For better or worse (I like to think better), I believe in age appropriate humor as part of an overall teaching philosophy. I also tend to be lively. But the bottom line is that we all understand our goals and reach them. When I walk into a classroom or even a solo session, I want to know what the student(s) needs are. I believe in teaching to the goals and then even exceeding them. At the same time, I'm not rigid at all. There are many ways to hit the target. Students come in all shapes, sizes, and moods. As a teacher, I need to accommodate that.
I am currently self-employed as a computer software trainer. My practice includes clients as well as groups. As part of my work, I'm currently an adjunct professor at 2 local community colleges. I'm also a Sunday school teacher at my local congregation. I've been ... read more

I have four semesters of calculus, numerous chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, statistics, finance, accounting, marketing, management, and liberal arts courses. I also have a temporary CT teaching certificate for secondary education math.
I believe any student is capable of learning any subject when they are taught in a gentle and patient manner. It is important to help the student gain confidence with the subject and to build his self-esteem. As the student increases his knowledge and problem-solving abilities his confidence and curiosity will also increase. Learning will become a lifetime pursuit.
