Graduating from Upstate was a wonderful experience. I was given the oppurtunity to study reading at great leangth. I worked with students that had many reading different reading diffuculties. Since graduating I have been substituting. This has given me a wide range of experience from K5 to 12th. I have learned even more since graduating about how different student learn things. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children and have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the fourth grade. My favorite part about teaching is when I see the "light bulb" go on in a child's mind and there is excitement about learning. I think every child can learn and that children need structure and guidance in the learning process. I also believe that children can do more than what we often think they can so they need to be encouraged to stretch their thinking, to use their imaginations, and to not give up when something is difficult or challenging.

I have always had a desire to teach and be involved in education. After earning a degree in Broadcasting, I decided to change fields and get into teaching. I earned a CELTA (Certificate in English Teaching to Adults) from Cambridge University in 1999. Upon receiving that certificate I immediately began teaching English to adults. I first worked in an on-site language school environment and then later in a more freelance, corporate environment. Giving a student the answer does not facilitate their learning. My style of tutoring and teaching is to reinforce the basics, ask leading questions and give examples that assist the student discover the correct answers for him or herself.
While substitute teaching various subjects, I discovered my hidden talent – making math understandable for youth. My other gifts include excellent grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. I don’t have a teacher’s certificate, however, and am currently choosing not to substitute, but I miss the personal interaction with students who want to learn.

I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them. That being said I try to make the learning as fun as possible but organized. I also try to bring in anything that they are interested in to make them enjoy the subject they are learning.
