I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor. From my experience working for the Supplemental Instruction Program, my teaching style revolves around an interactive approach that emphasizes participation. While in class, students are often expected to absorb information like a sponge from lectures. I have always been good with students. I tutored in grade school and high school. I was able to teach my brother, who has learning disabilities, enough chemistry in two weeks to get a B on his final and pass the high school chemistry class that he was failing. Learning is a challenge, not an enemy. Anyone who can not learn a subject is not learning correctly. They either are not willing, or are not being taught in the right way. I have had no problems focusing on the fundamentals, so that students have less to memorize and are able to approach problems they have not seen before. The more they understand why each question is being asked and what they are supposed to learn, the more success they will have. I am not interested in students being dependent on me.
