Learning Problems/ADHD/and College Bound Experience

I am very aware of the necessity of adapting my teaching style to the learning modality of those I am working with. As an educator I evaluated students to define how they best process information. They may be auditory learners, visual learners or they may use a combination approaches. I am very patient and understand that everyone can learn. I believe in setting goals and evaluating progress to establish new goals when necessary.
I have taught in Michigan and in California. I also have credentials as a school counselor and psychologist. I have experience with all aspects of the special education system from the K through grade 12 level. This incudes testing, placement and re-evaluation and the IEP process. I also have worked at the post secondary level and am familiar with academic and financial aide requirements.

I started substitute teaching in 1983 while I was working on my Master's Degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have been a substitute teacher in Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Glendale, and Palm Springs. I have had experience as a long term substitute in Senior English for a year at Palm Springs High School, also in Palm Springs, I did six months as a Special Education teacher at Cree Middle School. While I was in Glendale, I worked a year at Allen Continuation High School teaching English and Social Studies. As a Merchant Marine and Chief Steward I have taught, tutored, or mentor kids of all ages and backgrounds. My passion when teaching is to try and breakdown the subject to it's most basic level. A level that the person being taught can understand. Having work with kids from different ethnic and educational backgrounds I find this to be very affective and productive. Also, not having been a great student in high school with dyslexia, I have been able to over come these short comings and graduate from collage with honors.
