Creating Independent Learners

My experience dates back to when I was in high school in the early 80's tutoring students and family members. I've also taught classes on Management of Aggressive Behavior / Appled Non-Violence to mental health professionals throughout the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding communities. I also worked as teacher assistant in the mental health setting working with special needs students. My comments on tutoring Sociology : Although I only took two semesters of Sociology in college, they were taught by a very intense and demanding professor who assigned a lot of work and books to read, and formulated incredibly difficult exams, I aced both classes, and tutored Sociology for over 10 years. So basically, I believe I a more than qualified to teach the subject more than competently.

Even before I graduated from NDNU with my teaching credential in English and social studies, I have tutored for several years in almost every subject. I have come to understand that each individual has his/her own unique way of learning.
The way I teach is very simple. I explain my teaching style using the analogy of a mother bird teaching her baby how to fly. The mother guides her baby, teaching it, showing it the ropes of life, and when it comes time, the baby flies off on its own with no help. This is quite similar to how I teach and tutor children. I guide them through lesson plans and homework with a helping hand, and when it comes time for them to "fly," I let them go and hopefully they will understand the concept and be able to work individually. When this happens, it is truly an inspiring moment, to be there and watch children grow.
