Creating Independent Learners

My experience dates back to when I was in high school in the early 80's tutoring students and family members. I've also taught classes on Management of Aggressive Behavior / Appled Non-Violence to mental health professionals throughout the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding communities. My comments on tutoring Sociology : Although I only took two semesters of Sociology in college, they were taught by a very intense and demanding professor who assigned a lot of work and books to read, and formulated incredibly difficult exams, I aced both classes, and tutored Sociology for over 10 years. So basically, I believe I a more than qualified to teach the subject more than competently.

I graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2007 with a BA in communication studies. The curriculum at UNLV has given me a solid foundation in both my written and verbal communication skills. I also completed the gerontology program as well in 2007. I have been involved with senior theater programs, and I am currently mentoring for a non-profit organization. My teaching style is somewhat relaxed so that I can encourage my students to open up. When I first begin tutoring someone I let them do things their way rather than tell them how to do something. Then, I tell them that if their method isn't working, we will try it my way. In addition to teaching them the material, I try to pass off good studying habits as well. For example, rather than help a student write a paper by simply editing their paper, I try to show the student how helpful brainstorming is, and/or how to create an efficient, simple outline. I also try to find at least one thing a student is good at and encourage him in that area. Once a student realizes he is good at something, he feels more confident in other areas as well.
