I have been learning sign language for over eight years now and it is one of the passions in my life. I took two years of ASL in high school, three years in college and then got my bachelors degree in sign language interpreting with my minor in ASL studies. I have interpeted on and off for the last several years for schools and have found that my true passion in life is teaching. So now I am tutoring ASL. :)

I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had much success with tutoring children this way. I love the chance to make a child a reader.
Since I was a young girl, the English language has been as important to me as breathing. I have tutored elementary school children thru the S.M.A.R.T. program as well as through classroom assistance programs. I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. Most of all, I am an interested learner, in a variety of subjects, and I am excited to share my interest with others. I have a good sense of when I am being understood, and when I am not. I ask for questions, both so that I can explain myself, and so that that subject might be brought to greater depth.
