Journalism is one of my top subjects!

Over the past 20 years, I have taught Italian to students of all ages and backgrounds. I have a Bachelor's degree in Italian and a secondary teaching credential from San Francisco State University. I love to help students gain an understanding of Italian grammar from an English-speaking point of view, or improve conversational ability for an upcoming trip. I am expert in English grammar as well, and have been published multiple times in local magazines, so I can help students of English with all grammar and writing questions.
I have a Bachelor's Degree and Single Subject Secondary credential in Italian. I have tutored hundreds of students, from beginners to advanced, over the past 15 years. After I got my BA and Illinois secondary school certification, I pursued my MFA in Playwriting at the University of Utah. I forged a career as a writer and journalist. My liberal education in history and the arts deeply benefited me. Since 1990, I've been a full-time editor for several daily newspapers and magazines, and I continue a profitable freelance writing career. I taught for Loyola University, New Orleans, and two business colleges, and currently teach the composition, computer applications, and speech requirements for a local branch of Kaplan University -- a private business school.
At Loyola University, as director of the Writing Lab, I used peer tutoring and computers to assist students in the composition classes. I developed a love for tutoring and remediation -- for the student who needs one-on-one instruction. I allow the student to be successful. Every lesson must en ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. The classroom should be a learning place of activities and fun.

As a United States Peace Corps Volunteer, I worked with local youth in a Fijian village over the course of two years. I created a study groups based on education level and subject matter for the young adults living in the community. I focused lessons on English reading and comprehension, effective writing skills, algebra, calculus, and basic science. Working with youth from another culture and in a foriegn language forced me to gain strong interpersonal skills, innovative ways to tutor students, and the patience to work with students to achieve their academic goals.
I worked with students from the age of eight to eighteen. Each age group provided its own set of challenges and opportunities to strengthen my experience as a tutor. I completed my MBA and Juris Doctorate while employed full time, married with two children. It has given me insight into the learning process and what is or isn't a distraction. I have taught over 20 years in several community colleges a full range of business subjects while employed in the accounting function. In addition, I published and managed a Law Review and later a sports magazine nationally.
I enjoy use of the Socratic Method but recognize that in the sciences a more pragmatic process is required. Over the years I have concluded that good teaching requires good analysis of which particular approach works for a student and then alter the materials to fit the need.

It truly depends on the student and the subject. I try to adapt my teaching style to what the student needs. If one approach is not working, then we can work together to find an approach that does. I believe that it is important for the student to be able to relate to the teacher and it is the teachers job to create that connection.
Over the past 15 years I have had variety of different teaching experiences. I taught literature as a TA at UC Santa Barbara while studying for my Masters. I have tutored K-12 students in both Math and English. While studying for my undergraduate I assited in running a homeless shelter where I taught many of the children reading, writing, and math. I have a passion for teaching and am a mother myself and understand the true value of educating our youth.
