A Little Bit About Me...

Though I am a student of Biotechnology, helping others in the field of mathematics has been of interest in that its a common “language” worldwide. Prior to completing my General Arts degree, I had aided two individuals in math, an adult and a high school student in college algebra; and recently aided a coworker this past year in the same subject. In addition, I had later acquired 70+ credit hours towards an Electrical Engineering Degree, which further honed my math skills into the range of college level calculus, trigonometry, differentials, and basic statistics. Furthermore, I have experience in working with the public for 10+ years in customer support/service environments.
All who wish to learn have but to ask for help. I believe anyone can learn anything they want and that no one deserves to be told otherwise. In tutoring math, the individual needs to have their homework pr ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). If a student does have a mental model then I will test its accuracy using the standard procedures approved and or recommended by the institution of enrollment. Further encounters are then simply for reinforcement until the student is confident.
Over several years as a teacher, tutor, and teaching assistant I have had the privilege of refining my teaching strategy. For example, as a physics tutor, I coached a high school senior who was intimidated with the subject how to master it using a simple reproducible foundation ... read more

I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught.
I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. I believe that all children are capable of achieving academic success and that it is necessary to find the right teaching method in able to help them to reach their highest potential. I understand that many children learn differently than from the methods taught in schools and I am willing to work with them until we figure out how it is that they learn best. I believe in a “hands on” approach that makes learning fun. I push for good work, but I create a relaxed environment while giving children the encouragement that they need in order to help them meet their goals and improve their self-esteem.

A Little Bit About Me...

In the time I spent in high school, I tutored several other students in mathematics ranging from Algebra I through Calculus I. I am currently a fourth year undergraduate student at Georgia Institute of Technology. I am studying Aerospace Engineering and in fulfilling the requirements for my major, I have taken many mathematics courses. The combination of my experience from high school as well as what I've learned in college will allow me to be a successful tutor.
When I first work with a student, I like to get to know the method of teaching that they have already experienced from their math teacher. This allows me to know what sort of methods and teaching styles they student has already been exposed to and thus allow me to elimnate strategies that do not work. Being in sync with the student's teacher is very important. I work very hard to make sure that I am teaching them in a way ... read more
