Passionate about learning.

I have experience as a peer tutor. Since I am an avid reader, I love all things related to books, vocabulary, literature and English. I have young children that I help daily with homework assignments. I have also worked many years as a trainer in genetics. I am also a DI(directed instruction) volunteer for elementary school. I have 12 years experience in the healthcare/mental health field and a lot of that experience has been working with children and teens. I work well one on one with children and feel individualized attention provides the structure and support that many kids need. I am available to come to your home as this would minimize distractions too.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy tutoring a great deal because you can help the students gain confidence in themselves to do better with hard work and discpline. Everyone learns different and I try to find the best way to incorpate all styles of learning into my tutoring, so everyone is learning. I like to get the students involved in the learning by them showing they understand by examples and activities. I want them to know and understand the lesson I am teaching.
As a student who was assisted by tutoring, I would be glad to help other students achieve excellence in their studies and gain confidence in themselves. I have been a tutor since I was in a freshmen in high school. I have tutored students in English and reading skills. I tutored a group of sixth graders, who approved their state academic scores. It was a great joy for them to see they could do it.

I recently relocated to the Huntersville area. I recently graduated from UNCW with a degreee in Psychology with a focus on children. Since middle school, working with children has been my passion. I realized my dream after some of my cousins came over to America from the war torn country of Liberia and were having a very hard time adjusting. I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill's Master's Program for Rehabilitation but declined after fearing it would take me down the path of working with the elderly instead of working with children. I have very extensive experience working with children at camps, researching at UNCW, tutoring foster children, and special needs with Lindley Habilitation services in Wilmington (mainly working with a client having Hunter's syndrome who was learning sign language, etc). I am both CPR and first aid certified. I have used all my knowledge of math (especially st ... read more

I have a passion for teaching and have built a career of making learning fun, hands-on, and accessible to students of all ages. Every student is different, and I am very good at evaluating a student’s individual needs and tailoring my teaching style to suite him or her. I believe that it is essential to not only teach subject matter, but also to instill in students a love of learning as well as the confidence that they can learn anything if they really try. I take every opportunity to make learning hands-on and interactive. Applying subject matter to current events and students’ lives is essential to their development and appreciation of learning. My overall goal is to be a positive influence in every student’s personal and educational development.
During my formal college education I acquired a very broad knowledge base in the sciences and social sciences. I have 7 years exp ... read more

I am driven to help others especially through education. I have a BS in Biology and Chemistry from Duke University which allowed me to have in depth understanding of both subjects. Furthermore I have experience tutoring a college bound student with Biology and Pre-calculus, furthermore I have additional tutoring experience in math, reading, language and all areas of the sciences.
I believe that education is the key to success and I hope to encourage my students to see the fun and excitement in learning rather than treating it as a task they have to do. I am very creative and patient when it comes to teaching my students. I think all children have natural curiosity and it just needs to be sparked by a patient and fun person. I hope to be that person for my students.

My teaching style ultimately depends of the student. I work much better with an individual or small group than with a class because I can find the angle that works best for each student. For younger children, I like to make learning into different games to keep their attention. For older students, I think it is important to establish some level of confidence early on within a subject so that they do not get too discouraged while new material is presented.
I have always had a good ability in math and sciences. I obtained a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester, with a minor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. I tutored college students in Psychology and Chemistry during my time there. I have also worked with all ages of children while working as a ski-instructor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I tailor my teaching to each student’s needs. I have learned it is best to take my cues from the student’s personality and the resources they have available at home and school. The most significant elements I can provide for them are clear explanations of subject material, good rapport, and the ability to detect any present learning difficulties. My goals for each student I teach or tutor is to foster a conducive environment for learning in which the student is not afraid to attempt a problem and fail, they learn from their mistakes, and empower themselves to succeed.

As a UCF graduate and even prior to that I have always helped in the area of homework and study. I have earned a bachelor degree in Psychology and I have started a second bachelor's degree in Forensics. I have obtained many tutoring skills in my various areas of study including math, English, psychology, and science.
I have worked with children since I was 13. I have worked in settings where I was a daycare worker, a nanny, and a substitute teacher. I believe that every child has thier own unique way of learning even though there may be a mainstream way of teaching. I like to see where a child is and then go from there to see what would be the best way to help them learn new things.

While working on my BA in English, I was employed in the campus lab in the subjects of English/writing, Spanish, and some Social Studies. I helped fellow students with writing essays, grammar, sentence structure, brain-storming, and also provided them with any helpful study tools possible. Helping other students not only allowed me to bring a positive resource to those around me, but it also helped me to refresh my own skills. I worked on a specific schedule every week, but also made myself available to students who could not make those hours due to scheduling conflicts. I welcomed work, even off the clock, because the need was crucial and would benefit the campus as a whole.
Because people learn in different ways, I initially try to find out as much as possible about how each person learns the best. When presented with an assignment, I ask my tutee to read the directions of the as ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice with minors in African American Studies and Sociology from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While studying at UNCC, composing papers on a variety of subjects enhanced my grammar and sentence structure. Being a Lead teacher at Dixon Academy, supplied me with experience in interacting with both children and their parents from diverse behavioral, cultural, and economic backgrounds. In addition, it was my goal to make sure that my students completed their homework before leaving the center. Helping my children achieve that goal allowed me to apply my knowledge in mathematics, English, art, and science.

I believe that first key step to successful teaching is to allows the student convey his/her needs or problem areas. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding. Walking students through diagrams or schematics is also helpful, especially when teaching scientific information.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that my teaching style is very hands on and easy to follow. I have the ability of simplifying statistical and mathematical procedures into easier, more understandable terms. I am very patient and this allows me to better adapt to a child's specific learning needs and education level. My best teachers were the one's that made me feel comfortable asking questions and admitting when I do not fully understand a concept. I hope to apply this teaching style to my own in order to make my pupils feel the same way.
In 2009 I graduated with a BS in Statistics from Virginia Tech. I also received a minor in Business. Before recently moving to Charlotte, NC I worked as a contracted consultant for a company called Mountaineer Capital LLP in Charleston, WV. I feel this experience along with extensive knowledge of math and sciences makes me capable of teaching others.

In Medical School, Residency and practice I have always been expected to be in the simultaneous role of student, teacher, mentor and tutor. I can say I have a vast amount of training and expereience in science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, as well as the liberal arts. I score as an ITSP on the Myers-Briggs evaluation which means I am not only concrete in speech and utilitarian in getting things done, I am also directive and attentive in teaching settings. I have done a small amount of teaching at the junior college level and am comfortable giving oral presentations to groups of people.
My teaching style has been to make learning fun and easy to remember. When I have taught I've been very interactive with the students and have gotten many compliments from students and patients as well, on my ability to communicate on almost any level.
