As a "late in life" graduate of Fordham University, I received permanent Teaching Certification and continued to teach in a public school district for 5 years. I was then offered an amazing opportunity to bring a non-profit pre-school and daycare back to fruition which I accomplished in under a year. Having left the pre-school after an ownership change, I have found myself desiring to go back to my real passion - teaching. I also have over 20 years of Business and marketing experience working as a Communications and marketing Director in Mid-town Manhattan.
I am an energetic, enthusiastic teacher who loves to teach children and adults of all ages. I enjoy challenging my students with fun projects and activities that get creative juices flowing and make learning fun!

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the past year, I have tried to extend my ability to share my love and appreciation of English and literature with others. As an English/Communications major, I am very knowledgable in a variety of subjects including grammar, writing composition and reading comprehension. Last year, as President of the Writers Forum, we spent several months tutoring as part of an after school program where we helped children in Baltimore write.
For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.

My teaching style is centered around full-filling the needs of student, especially in a tutor setting. Being focused and showing a genuine care and consideration for the student shows them that you not only respect them but want them to be successful. Positive re-inforcement is a main focus of mine and it has proven successful in the previous students I have worked one-on-one with. Also coming prepared, knowing what the student has difficulties with and what the student can catch onto easily is very important in planning what specific areas need to be addressed.
As an extremely motivated female, I am seeking employment through tutoring because I feel I have gained a great plethora of skills necessary to be successful in a variety of career fields, especially related to the job oppertunity offered through your company. I am very creative and can communicate effortlessly. During my stay in India, I volunteered in a Blind school and later in a school for slow learners and children with autism. My Masters in Psychology supplemented this learning. I worked for a year with Citibank in their training department that involved teaching new employees and developed numerous teaching modules. I also write book reviews for an Indian daily.
I'd rather not use the trite statement- 'I love teaching', as true as it is. I enjoy communicating with people and I like to observe the fascinating way in which each individual thinks differently. I suppose this is what has drawn me towards teaching. That and the fact that I can b ... read more

The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.

My educational and professional experience are both concentrated on writing. More narrowly, analytical writing and legislative reporting. My experience tutoring on writing goes back to when I was part of a volunteer peer program, tutoring English as a second language students to assist them with mastering the English regents. At the collegiate level, I was a school tutor for 100-200 level liberal arts class, helping numerous students write strong papers and beat Intro to Logic. I also was a teachers assistant for Politics and Film, a political theory cross-listed grad/undergrad class. In sum, I have experience working across a wide age range and am able to accommodate a variety of learning styles, from junior high to adult levels.
My teaching style is professional, friendly, and peer to peer. I like to break things down for students and I encourage them to ask a lot of questions. I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I understand frustration at school because I experienced it myself. I believe a better grasp of communication (reading, writing, speaking skills) can change a student’s confidence about learning (and life) and improve scientific outcomes on class grades and standardized tests. Communication and literacy skills improve when students have concrete know-how (like grammatical structure or organization in writing) and opportunities to use these skills in a supportive (non-judgmental) atmosphere. This is the magical combination I strive to provide when teaching.
I began as a middle school English teacher in the Bronx a decade ago. For ten years I’ve taught English language and literacy skills in New York, Oakland and Ecuador. I speak Spanish and have a second master’s degree in journalism. I achieved humbling recognition as a writer and producer of print and radio journalism in Alabama a ... read more

I believe that every student has his or her own way of learning and therefore, I strive to get to know my students on a personal level so that I can help build upon their strengths and work with them to improve and not be intimidated by their weaknesses. I enjoy relating popular culture (music, movies, television) into writing assignments and SAT preparation. I believe that every student deserves to be heard and empowered in order to grow academically and personally. I have worked for the past six summers with teenagers in a creative writing outdoor workshop, and I've learned a great deal from this experience, specifically that teenagers have a lot of talent.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy watching people's faces light up when they grasp a point. Utilizing everything from movies, games, lecture and discussion, I try to find out where my student can plug into the subject under scrutiny and start there. Whatever age my student may be, we can find common ground for understanding a subject in a novel way that makes the material become a part of the student's experience. Learning is not just cramming facts into a person's head, but finding a way to make those facts flow into the digestive system and nourish the whole individual, making the learning a part of the person's life.

I graduated Cum Laude from Manhattan College with a double major in Psychology and Communications. In addition to studying for two majors, I was also a Division 1 athlete and held 2 jobs. Seeing as I was very busy with extracirricular activities, I believe that my graduating with honors was truly a testament to how hard I worked. Since college, I have worked in two jobs that have really tested my gramatical, reading, editing and speaking skills. I tutored all types of students while in college and can't wait for the opportunity to tutor again. When I commit to a job, I follow through with 110% of my time and energy.

I am a strong believer in Multiple Intelligences. I know that first I must learn who my students are and how they learn if I am to teach them successfully. I employ the Socratic method often possible, and keep lessons as student-centered as possible. I frequently make use of the students' interests and technology to engage them. Students thrive when they see the usefulness of what they are learning, and when techniques are adapted to their needs.
As a professional educator, I am dedicated to seeing all students succeed. I have earned two bachelor degrees, a BA in History and a BA in English, as well as New York State certification and my MAT Social Studies. I have tutored throughout my academic career, and continue to teach and tutor in a wide variety of subjects.
