Working with people, particularly children, has always been a passion of mine. Through the psychology program at Husson College I was able to gain a better understanding of human interaction, interpersonal relationships, as well as to obtain further insight on the foundation of the cognitive wiring in which we all possess. I also have a 6 year old daughter, who I have found to be the key to my drive in watching all children achieve academic success. I think the process starts with parents but branches out into the world of educators, and truly is a battle that can be won as long as there is always a core group of people committed to each child's success in the classroom. I have found that most children with reading difficulties learn by reading well-written stories and by writing from their own experiences. However, they also have to have the necessary tools and knowledge to do so, and that is where phonics comes in. I believe that children should be taught through their own interests at their own individual levels, and that children should be given choices when possible so they feel in control of their own learning. Based on my experience, I believe young children learn best through games, and that even necessary drills can be taught in a fun way. As a native of Iceland I do have an accent, but I have been very successful helping native English students improve their reading. I have experience as an instructor while in the Marine Corps, and during that time I have found that I am really suited to teaching. The idea of giving new knowledge to people of all ages is an exciting one. I have done some substitute teaching at Athens Elementary School. I have found that I get along well with children and that they like me. I have found that children like me and will listen to what I have to say. I try and teach the best way possible according to each child's needs. I am patient and will take as much time that is needed to teach your child. Through my studies in Environmental issues and Landscape design, I have taken many writing-intensive classes, science courses and geography courses. As a graduate student, I spent significant time writing and focusing on grammatical topics of technical writing. Also, I have several years of experience working with young students as an educator. As a senior in college I worked as an America Reads volunteer in an inner city school system, assisting elementary school students improve their reading skills. After college, I worked for four years as an educator in a natural history museum, teaching school children topics related to ecology, biology and including math and critical thinking. I have always loved working with children. Through my experience as a special education instructor, I have learned children can learn in a variety of ways. My teaching philosophy is that each child has different strengths, and it is imperative to tailor an educational program to these strengths.
