I have two different teaching styles depending on whether I am in a preschool setting or middle school type setting. I enjoy a very positive an inviting atmosphere where my students are comfortable while creating a community of learners. I have a strong sense of authority that is initially established, coming from such a young age. I do not expect any more from one student than I would another. Difference through learners is the most beneficial way a teacher can bring change in the classroom. I feel that it is essential to teach my students that it is acceptable to agree to disagree.

The difficulty comes from attempting to connect their intuitive understanding with the symbols on the paper. Many students think of these subjects as the memorization of formulas. But if they grasp the "basic idea," they can adapt and apply it to any problems they face. Instead of developing a toolbox of formulas, my goal as a teacher is to help the student develop a toolbox of problem-solving strategies. I learn where a student has strengths and exploit these strengths as a pathway to connecting the tangible and abstract, the "basic idea" and the mathematical symbols.
