I have taught special-needs students for over 30 years. I am licensed in learning disabilities and for the mentally handicapped. I'm also licensed in general elementary K through eight. My experience includes working with students who have learning disabilities and cognitive challenges. I have also worked with students who have ADHD and autism , including Asberger Syndrome. I have taught grades kindergarten through high school successfully. My experience includes city teaching and rural teaching. My specialty is reading instruction. ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects!

I have found that if a child is having trouble in a given subject, the first thing a teacher needs to do is access the child’s learning style. All children learn differently and if a child is having problems it is often because the information has only been presented one way. Therefore the material needs to be presented in various ways until the student learns it by which ever method works best for them. I get excited by helping children and adults learn and find it exciting to try to figure out why a student has not learned the subject area he/she is asking for help in. My teaching style is based on principles of respect, creativity, and growth. I start by establishing a personal connection to the student. Without their buy-in, anything you try to teach will be lost. Once I understand what motivates the student and what they feel successful at, I can begin to design a program that will meet their needs and allow them to feel success. I love hands-on activities and discovery learning. I would much rather provide the opportunity for a child to learn then to dictate what that learning looks like.
