My comments on tutoring Composition : I enjoy writing, its process, & the vocabulary that goes into it. I feel competent helping others with their writing without imposing my writing style on them. I especially like teaching composition because it incorporates all aspects of language arts, which are near and dear to my heart.

I have taught over 20 years in private & public schools in Hawaii & one summer in Michigan. My experience ranges from elementary to college level. I have also tutored SAT prep in English and math and instructed English As a Second Language for Hawaii Pacific University in their summer exchange programs with Asian countries. During the summers, I teach the Brown Reading Systems at private schools, most recently at I'olani. I have experience with both highly motivated and at-risk high school students, active military, and adults. During my years of teaching GED prep, I covered the four core subjects with focus on language arts and math.

Composition is one of my top subjects! Frequent contributer to newspaper.

Basic piano geared towards student interest level. Many of my students have quit piano from other teachers because they were bored or forced to play the same classical song for 4 months until it was perfect. I engage the student.
I began playing piano at the age of 5. At 13 I started teaching piano in Hawaii Kai at the request of neighbors and the business has continued all these years. One of my former students is a police office now, one is a prosecuting attorney, one sailed on the Hokulea. I have great pride in feeling that my small role as a teacher helped steer them towards a successful career. We all know that music instruction helps students do better at school. Teaching requires a patient, easygoing individual since not all students learn at similar speeds. There is not one single way to teach, so it is important to encompass different approaches.
